Dr. Camargo is a Professor, Chairman of the Section of Periodontics, and the Associate Dean of Clinical Dental Sciences at the UCLA School of Dentistry. He is also a Diplomate for the American Board of Periodontology.

After a short time practicing general dentistry in Brazil, Dr. Camargo came to UCLA to receive formal training as a periodontist and to pursue an M.S. degree in Oral Biology. Upon graduation, Dr. Camargo practiced privately as a periodontist in Los Angeles before coming back to UCLA as a full time faculty member in 1996. At UCLA, Dr. Camargo directs the pre-doctoral clinical program in Periodontics, conducts clinic teaching, and lectures at the pre- and post-doctoral levels. He conducts research in the fields of periodontal regeneration and implant dentistry and practices privately at the UCLA Periodontal and Implant Group Practice. In 2007 Dr. Camargo received an M.B.A. from the Anderson School of Management at UCLA and has since been involved in various Academic Senate Committees in the UCLA campus.

Research/Creative Activities/Honors

Dr. Camargo’s research interest is in the regeneration of bone and periodontal tissues. He has conducted basic and clinical research that focuses on novel treatment options to save teeth affected by periodontitis as well as to minimize bone resorption following tooth extraction in order to facilitate placement of dental implants. He has now become involved in developing an animal model to elucidate the mechanisms involved in bone loss around dental implants after they have been in function. This may lead to the development of strategies directed at preventing peri-implant disease. Dr. Camargo’s research has been funded by federal grants and contracts from the private sector. He has published over 80 manuscripts,books, and chapters and has presented over 200 lectures in the US and abroad.

Patient Care Activities

Dr. Camargo treats private patients in the UCLA Periodontics and Implant Group Practice, located at 100 Westwood Blvd, suite 320, Los Angeles, CA, 90095. The phone number for appointments is 310-206-6252. He is currently accepting new patients who are self-referred or referred by other dentists. In his practice, Dr. Camargo provides comprehensive periodontal and surgical implant services. Treatment modalities offered by Dr. Camargo include non-surgical and surgical periodontal therapy, periodontal surgical procedures to enhance esthetics such as grafts for root coverage and crown lengthening, implant placement, bone grafts to enhance implant delivery and sinus elevation procedures. He also works closely with restorative dentists who provide state of the art care restorative care for natural teeth and dental implants.
