Research/Creative Activities/Honors
In addition to conducting clinical research in periodontics, Dr. Takei is involved in the development of educational materials for undergraduate and graduate education in periodontics and implant surgery. He is a co-editor of the classic textbook, Carranza’s Clinical Periodontology, 9th Edition (2002) and 10th Edition (2006), published by Elsevier.
Dr. Takei founded the first, formal UCLA Continuing Dental Education courses with universities in Japan, and also launched a dental student exchange program with Japanese universities which has been permanently endowed.
Among the highlights of Dr. Takei’s professional career are the following honors:
•“Honorary Alumnus of the Year, 1998,” UCLA School of Dentistry
•“Distinguished Alumnus of the Year, 2001,” Marquette University
•“Master Clinician Award, 2006,” American Academy of Periodontology (the organization's highest honor)
In addition, eight graduating classes have selected Dr. Takei as their "Outstanding Professor," and he received the Alpha Omega Educator Award in 1975.
Patient Care Activities
Dr. Takei supervises the patient care delivered by resident dentists in the UCLA Postgraduate Periodontics and Implant Surgery Clinic.

Dr. Takei has presented more than 600 lectures and seminars in the United States, Canada, Europe, Asia and South America. He has also given more than 200 continuing education courses for UCLA.
