The Division of Oral Biology and Medicine at the UCLA School of Dentistry offers the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Oral Biology, with specialization in the areas of cancer cell biology, bacterial and fungal pathogenesis, calcified tissue biology, developmental biology, immunology, neuroscience, pain research, pharmacology, and virology. The master's program is designed to provide dentists and oral health researchers with biomedical research experience and basic science knowledge, while the doctoral program is designed to prepare students for careers as independent research scientists in oral health research.
These programs accept students for the upcoming fall quarter only.
Application Process
Deadlines:
• PhD Program – December 15
• Masters Program – December 15
Any materials submitted after the deadline will not be considered. There are no exceptions to this policy.
There are two separate steps when applying for the Oral Biology graduate programs:
- Online application through the UCLA Graduate Division
- Supplemental information submitted directly to the Oral Biology Graduate Program Office in the UCLA School of Dentistry
UCLA Graduate Division Online Application:
Please carefully review the application and directions found at http://www.gdnet.ucla.edu/gasaa/admissions/applicat.htm. Any problems experienced with the online application should be directed to the UCLA Graduate Division.
Supplemental Information to be Submitted to the UCLA School of Dentistry – Oral Biology Graduate Program
In addition to the information provided to the Graduate Division, any individual applying for either the Masters or PhD program in Oral Biology must submit the following information directly to the Oral Biology Graduate Program office before his/her application will be considered:
- Two official copies of all transcripts (Non-U.S. University transcripts must have translation materials attached).
- Evidence of conferral of all degrees.
- Statement of purpose or self statement (please send a separate copy from your online application).
- Three letters of recommendation from qualified individuals (not more than one year old and addressed to the Oral Biology Graduate Program Admissions Committee).
- GRE Score (Ph.D. applicants only – Please do NOT assume that they will be forwarded to our office by the testing agency, providing us with your copy is the most dependable method). GRE School Code is 4837. Department code is 0604.
- TOEFL Score (All non-US applicants). TOEFL School code is 4837. Department Code is 38.
- Financial Statement of Students Seeking Non-Immigrant Visas (VERY IMPORTANT)
Foreign applicants please note; any incomplete information on your financial statement will result in your visa processing being delayed or halted. Please provide thorough information in answer to all questions. International applicants must show proof of financial support of $44,377.00, available for the first year.

Selection Criteria
Letters of recommendation and a statement of purpose play an important part in the admission committee’s selection process. Therefore, at least two of your recommendation letters should be from basic science faculty who are familiar with your scholarly abilities and your motivation for entry into a research-based degree program.
Articulated Degree Program
Applicants may apply for combined D.D.S./M.S., or advanced certificate training/Ph.D. by making simultaneous by separate application for graduate study in Oral Biology and for admission to the D.D.S. program or to the certificate program. You must be accepted by both of the concerned units in order to participate in an articulated degree program.
