Honorary Alumni of the Year
Bob and Marian Wilson
The Dental Alumni Association is very proud to announce its selection of Bob & Marion Wilson as its Honorary Alumni of the Year for 2011 in recognition of their extraordinary generosity and service to the UCLA School of Dentistry.
Marion Wilson earned a bachelor’s degree in Art from UCLA in 1950 and her husband, Bob, received a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from UCLA in 1953. Marion and Bob Wilson have maintained a close relationship with their alma mater that extends back nearly a half century as students, volunteer leaders, and philanthropists. The plaza at the base of Janss Steps is named Wilson Plaza in honor of Bob and Marion Wilson. In April 2006, Bob and Marion Wilson received the UCLA Medal in recognition of their dedicated service to the university.
For more than two decades, Bob Wilson has made the cause of expanding access to oral health care one of his philanthropic and volunteer priorities. In the late 1980s, as a member of the Dentistry Board of Counselors, he led a fund-raising campaign that resulted in the creation of the Wilson-Jennings-Bloomfield UCLA Venice Dental Center. In 2008, Bob and Marion Wilson, and Mrs. Peggy Bloomfield, underwrote the cost of an expansion project that added a pediatric dentistry wing and made other improvements tothe facility. Their son, Tom Wilson, served as the pro bono project manager for the expansion, proudly carrying on his family’s tradition of supporting this vitally important community-based clinic.
Bob and Marion Wilson have also been major benefactors and advocates for the UCLA School of Dentistry through their generous contributions to the School-Wide Renovation Campaign, the Preclinical Teaching Laboratory Renovation Campaign, the Board of Counselors Endowed Scholarship, the Apollonian Society, and many other initiatives.
The Dental Alumni Association salutes Bob and Marion Wilson for all that they have done and continue to do to advance the UCLA School of Dentistry’s mission of quality patient care and community service.
