If you typed everything correctly, you should now be connected to the terminal server and looking at a desktop with a Dental icon. Click on the “Start” button and click on “Log Off”.
In the future when you launch the remote desktop application, you should see something similar to this with your appropriate information.
This is how Vista/Windows 7 saves the username and password for the Remote Desktop connection. When you click “Connect” you will be connected to the terminal server and should be looking at your desktop with the Dental Icon. Double click on the Dental Icon and the SOE program will launch and you will be able to login using your SOE username and password. There may be a pause of up to a minute the first time you login. When you are finished with SOE, close the program by clicking on the file/exit and logout (DO NOT JUST CLOSE THE WINDOW) by clicking on the start button at the bottom of the screen and clicking on logout.
Remember that patient information is confidential. Please take every precaution to prevent other people from accessing or viewing patient screens. Do not share your username or password with anyone as this is a violation of HIPAA and you do not want to expose yourself to legal action.
There is a 1 hour time limit per remote desktop session and 15 minutes till disconnect if your session is idle. You are allowed 1 concurrent session so do not share your username and password. As this is accessible from any internet connection you will be able to get to SOE from the student lounge or home. Eventually internet access will be available from the 4th floor lab also.
Since the remote SOE server allows access to patient data, we use high encryption and strong user passwords. Do not request changes to usernames or passwords.
