UCLA School of Dentistry Laptop Program
UCLA School of Dentistry Laptop Program
To provide every student with high-quality hardware, software and communications support, the School of Dentistry requires all incoming students to purchase one of five specified laptop computers (UCLA SoD/Dell Laptop Program or the ASUCLA/Lenovo program), pre-loaded with the communications peripherals and software necessary. In the event of a hardware or software problem with your laptop during your enrollment at UCLA SoD, you will receive full technical support from Computer Services, including access to a loaner laptop if your laptop requires warranty service. This approach enables us to provide high-quality hardware, software and communications support to help make every student fully productive in the School of Dentistry environment.
Computer Services support for Dell and Lenovo laptop program computers ends after the owner is no longer enrolled at UCLA. The laptop manufacturer's hardware support continues throughout the four-year Dental program.
We provide loaner laptops to students while their UCLA SoD Laptop Program laptop is out for repair. In order to ensure that all students have access to a loaner laptop when needed, students are expected to bring back their loaner laptop to exchange it for their own repaired laptop on the agreed due date.If the laptop has not been repaired, the student may return to Computer Services to request an extension. Students who do not return a loaner laptop within 10 business days of the due date may have their loaner rights suspended. Students who do not bring back a loaner laptop by the end of the quarter may have their class registration rights suspended.
Non-Participants in UCLA SoD Laptop Program
NOTE: The following section is only applicable to the classes of 2010 and 2011. Starting with the class of 2012, all students, regardless of technical competence, are required to purchase one of the three specified Dell models. There will be NO exceptions.
In order to be productive at the School of Dentistry, all entering students are required to have a PC (no Macs) laptop computer equal to the specifications (2009-2011 Specs) of the new Dell laptop package, including the peripherals and software utilized in the SoD environment. We recommend against using a laptop other than the SoD Laptop Program computer unless you are a user with a high degree of technical computing competence and are willing to handle your own hardware and software support independently of Computer Services. You will need to configure your software for the UCLA and School of Dentistry networks, as well as seek vendor assistance for any other problems. You will have access to limited phone support at the Computer Services Office, but we will not be able to provide you with any hardware, software or communications support.
Loaner laptops will be provided to Classes of 2010 and 2011 students not participating in the UCLA SoD Laptop Program (pending availability) if an existing laptop is being repaired or replaced. Note:
- A repair work order and verification that the existing laptop has been shipped for repair OR documentation of a purchase order for a new laptop must be presented before a loaner is provided.
- Priority for loaners will be given to participants in the SoD laptop programs.
Q: Do I have to purchase one of these 5 computers? Can’t I use my own laptop?
Yes, you must purchase one of the three Lenovo laptops from the UCLA Bookstore OR one of the two Dell laptops from the Dell/UCLA website. When you agreed to attend the UCLA School of Dentistry, you also agreed to purchase a new computer as specified by the School. There will be no exceptions.
Q: Can I purchase my computer directly from Dell or Lenovo instead of through the School programs?
No, you must order your computer through the Bookstore or the link provided to the Dell program on the School of Dentistry site. Upon purchasing your computer, you must e-mail us your receipt/sales order to prove that you purchased the proper model through the proper channel.
Q: How do I customize my laptop and will customization delay my shipment?
There are several upgrade options available for both the Lenovo and the Dell laptops. You are also free to purchase your own upgrades (e.g., memory, hard drive) from outside vendors but you will be responsible for installing/supporting those upgrades as they would not necessarily be covered by your warranty. When purchasing a Dell, it will show you the estimated ship date, based on your configuration. Lenovo has let us know that certain upgrades will delay shipment. Please contact the bookstore for more info.
Q: Why is there only one model available on the Dell site?
We are working with Dell to resolve this. If you are interested in a Dell, please wait. We will notify you when the Dell site is ready.
Q: Can I purchase my computer from the “Entire Catalog” section on the Dell site?
No, you must purchase one of the two “Recommended Bundles”.
