Dr. Paulo M. Camargo was appointed Chairman of the Section of Periodontics, effective May 17, 2013, and serves in this position concurrently with his position as Associate Dean of Clinical Sciences. Most recently, Dr. Camargo received the “Award for Outstanding Teaching and Mentoring in Periodontics”, presented by the American Academy of Periodontology. He has already received this honor three times; in 2011, 2009, and 2006.
Dr. Camargo is a diplomat of the American Board of Periodontology and a fellow of the American College of Dentists. He is currently a Professor of Periodontics and teaches at the pre- and post-graduate levels and conducts clinical and basic research that focuses on periodontal and bone regeneration. He practices privately at the UCLA Periodontics and Implant Group Practice. His history of service to the university and our school is very long.
Dr. Kumar C. Shah, Associate Clinical Professor in the Division of Advanced Prosthodontics and Director of the Advanced Prosthodontics Postgraduate Residency Program, has been appointed Director of the Faculty Group Dental Practice, effective July 23, 2013. Dr. Shah holds a B.D.S. degree, an M.S. degree in Prosthodontics and two advanced training certificates; one in Prosthodontics and the other in Maxillofacial Prosthodontics. Since 2006, he has also practiced in all areas of restorative and esthetic dentistry at the Faculty Group Dental Practice. Dr. Shah is an excellent administrator and is highly esteemed by his colleagues.

Dr. Reuben Kim was promoted to Associate Professor in the Divisions of Restorative Dentistry and Oral Biology and Medicine, effective July 1, 2013. Dr. Kim was promoted for his demonstration of independent research in numerous areas, including the role of oral mucosa in problems of the jaw, HIV-related oral health issues, oral cancers and aging, and linkages between dental materials and pulp cells.
Dr. Kim has been published in leading scientific journals, has proven to be an excellent teacher, and is building a national reputation as an oral cancer specialist.
Dr. Steve Y. Lee was appointed the new Director of the Professional Program for International Dentist (PPID), effective on May 28, 2013. Dr. Lee was part of the School's Class of 1994. In 2007, he came back as a Lecturer in the Division of Restorative Dentistry and a Group Director at the UCLA General Dental Clinic. In April of 2013, he was inducted into Omicron Kappa Upsilon, an Honorary Dental Society, and over the past few years, he has received several awards for his mentoring and teaching skills.
Dr. Elbert Tom was appointed a Group Practice Director (GPD) of the Comprehensive Patient Care teams, effective September 23, 2013. He has practiced general dentistry privately in Van Nuys since 1990 and has been a part-time lecturer (didactic and clinical) in the Section of Oral Radiology since 1988. More recently, he was appointed as a part-time lecturer (pre-clinical and clinical) in the Division of Restorative Dentistry. He has provided volunteer dental services on behalf of non-profit organizations and programs such as Meet Each Need With Dignity (MEND) and Global Brigades. Together, Dr. Tom’s educational qualifications and professional experience are of the highest caliber.
