Faculty Service Beyond the Halls of Dentistry
Here at the School of Dentistry, we are familiar with the contributions that our faculty make on a daily basis in our classrooms and our clinics. Less well known is that in addition to fulfilling their teaching and administrative responsibilities within the Center for the Health Sciences, many faculty are active in the campus governance system known as the UCLA Academic Senate.
The University of California is guided by a unique system of shared governance in which the faculty, via the Academic Senate, is empowered to determine academic policy, set conditions for admission and the granting of degrees, authorize and supervise courses and curricula, and advise the administration (both the UC president and individual campus chancellors) on faculty appointments, promotions and budgets.
At UCLA, Shane White is a member of the Senate's executive board and Vivek Shetty is its immediate past chair. Paulo Camargo serves on the Academic Senate's council for planning and budget. Neal Garrett is the secretary of the Senate and serves on the committee on continuing and community education (CCCE). Diana Messadi is the chair of the Senate's council on research and also is a member of the institutional review board oversight and faculty grant committees. Lawrence Wolinsky is currently the chair of the medical institutional review board (M-IRB) and also is a member of the council on academic personnel (CAP).
As educators and as campus leaders, these faculty members and many others serve as role models for students considering careers in academic dentistry.
