A Leader in the Community
This past October, Josyel Castellon, Senior Administrative Analyst, was recognized for her contributions to the Los Angeles City Council District 8.
Josyel is heavily involved in the community. She has served as a board member of East Valley Community Health Center, a federally qualified health center, for over 7 years. She is currently the Vice President of the North Area Neighborhood Development Council (NANDC), a city entity where she serves as a local representative.
Josyel was also nominated to serve as a member of the Charles R. Drew President’s Community Advisory Council and has been a key collaborator on the “Spring into Health Festival,” a partnership between the Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation, Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science, and the North Area Neighborhood Development Council. The partnership has provided over 1,000 individuals free glucose, diabetes, cholesterol and blood pressure tests, dental screenings and sealants, health and nutrition education, and access to local resources. To top all of this, she recently co-founded L.A. Women, a grassroots non-profit organization dedicated to empowering women in south Los Angeles, through health education, health promotion, and access to resources.
Josyel is an outstanding administrator in the Center for Oral/Head & Neck Oncology Research at the School of Dentistry. Congratulations Josyel!

Erin Hakim, Program Coordinator & International Advisor, and her husband, Shady, welcomed a baby boy on Monday, October 28th.
Gabriel Muir Hakim came into this world fast and furious with a Hollywood-worthy entry as the family rushed to the hospital in LA traffic. Erin's father, who has delivered hundreds of babies, was in the back on stand-by. Erin arrived at the hospital fully dilated at +1 station. Gabe was out 40 minutes later at 5:24 p.m.
Congratulations to Erin and Shady on the new addition to their family.
Minh Tran, Director of Curriculum and Academic Enrichment, and his wife, Monica, welcomed a baby girl on November 25th.
They named her Matilda after the character in the classic Roald Dahl children's book. Matilda was born in the afternoon at 5:05 p.m., and was 5lbs 8oz. Matilda is the couples first child, and they are extremely happy but exhausted.
Congratulations to Minh and Monica on their new baby girl.
