Dean Park Elected as a Fellow to the American Association for the Advancement of Science
Dean No-Hee Park was one of seven UCLA professors to be named as a fellow by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the world's largest general scientific society and the publisher of the journal Science. Members are chosen for their distinguished efforts to advance science or its applications.
Dean Park was honored "for distinguished contributions to the field of oral cancer and dental education, particularly for oral carcinogenesis, viral infection and cell aging." The selection of fellows has been an AAAS tradition since 1874.

Dr. Wenyuan Shi an Advocate for Immigration Reform
On Tuesday, Jan. 29, Dr. Wenyuan Shi, Professor and Chair of the Division of Oral Biology, had the honor of attending President Obama’s speech on immigration reform in Las Vegas, Nevada. Dr. Shi has been involved with U.S. senators regarding more lenient H1B visa and green card policies for high degree graduates from top educational institutes, such as UCLA.
Dr. Tara Aghaloo Appointed as the Assistant Dean for Clinical Research
Last November, Dr. Tara Aghaloo was appointed as the Assistant Dean for Clinical Research, a newly created position at the School. Dr. Aghaloo will be in charge of clinical research and clinical trials conducted by our faculty at the School. She will also be the Director of the Clinical Research Center and will work closely with the Clinical Translational Science Institute (CTSI) for the clinical research of the school.
Dr. Aghaloo is an Associate Professor in the Section of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. She holds a DDS, an MD, and a PhD. Her research focuses on bone biology and regeneration strategies at the basic, translational, and clinical levels. She is a diplomat of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and maintains an active clinical oral and maxillofacial surgery practice.
We wish Dr. Aghaloo great success in her new role.
Dr. Earl Freymiller Appointed as the first ever Bob and Marion Wilson Endowed Chair
Dr. Earl Freymiller was appointed as the first ever Bob and Marion Wilson Endowed Chair holder, effective January 1, 2013. Dr. Freymiller, who is currently a Health Sciences Clinical Professor, will also be appointed Professor of Clinical Dentistry, effective July 1, 2013.
Dr. Freymiller truly embodies the spirit of the newly created Bob and Marion Wilson Endowed Chair. The chair is designated for a distinguished faculty member who exemplifies excellence in teaching and service. Bob and Marion Wilson are long-time supporters of the School. They have previously collaborated in the areas of dental education and access to oral healthcare with the School of Dentistry, and are also credited with helping establish the Wilson-Jennings-Bloomfield UCLA Venice Dental Center.
Dr. Freymiller joined UCLA as an Assistant Professor in 1989 in the Section of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and over the years has added many academic and administrative roles to his list of responsibilities. He is a nationally recognized oral and maxillofacial surgeon, and he also volunteers several times a year in Ensenada, Mexico, providing services to underserved children with cleft lip and palate deformities.

Dr. Charles Alexander Appointed to the California's Physician Assistant Board
Charles Alexander, Ph.D., Associate Vice Provost for Student Diversity, Director of the Academic Advancement Program at UCLA and Associate Adjunct Professor in the Division of Public Health and Community Dentistry, has been appointed as a public member by Governor Brown to the California Physician Assistant Board.
The board is part of the Medical Board of California and its mission is to protect and serve consumers through licensing, education, and objective enforcement of the Physician Assistant laws and regulations.

Dr. Wong Appointed to Editorial Board of the Journal of Biological Chemistry
Dr. David Wong, Professor and Associate Dean of Research, was asked to join the editorial board of the y. The journal publishes papers based on original research that are judged to make a novel and important contribution to understanding the molecular and cellular basis of biological processes.
Dr. Wong’s term is effective from July 1, 2013, through September 30, 2018. He joins colleagues from other major universities and organizations around the world.
Dr. Francisco Ramos-Gomez Preventing Dental Caries in Infants, Young Children
Professor in the Section of Pediatric Dentistry, Dr. Francisco Ramos-Gomez, co-authored a report that was published in the British Dental Journal (BDJ) on “prevention and management protocols using caries risk assessment for infants and young children.” The findings in the report show the need for a medical disease prevention management model with an early establishment of a dental home.
The publisher of the BDJ, Nature Publishing Group, reported that the article was one of the top ten most viewed BDJ 2012 articles in December.

Dr. Steven Ganzberg Co-Authors a Scientific Report Featured in Anesthesia Progress
Dr. Steven Ganzberg, Clinical Professor and Chair of the Section of Dental Anesthesiology, was one of four dental anesthesiologists to author a scientific report in Anesthesia Progress – a Journal for Pain and Anxiety Control in Dentistry. The report covers data from a clinical study comparing different sedation methods for surgical extractions of third molars.

Dr. Dean Ho Elected to Board of Society for Laboratory Automation and Screening
Dr. Dean Ho, Professor of Dentistry, was elected to the Board of Directors of the Society for Laboratory Automation and Screening (SLAS). His term, effective January 1, 2013, runs for three years. He also serves SLAS as the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Laboratory Automation and recently received an SLAS Endowed Fellowship for his work at UCLA.

Congratulations to Dr. Dean Ho & Wife, Sarah
|Dr. Ho and his wife, Sarah, welcomed a baby boy into their family on December 12, 2012, at the UCLA Ronald Reagan Medical Center. Ethan Christopher Ho (aka ECHo) weighed in at 6 pounds flat. He is a happy, healthy, and active newborn.|
