Remembering Dr. John A. Yagiela and Dr. Susan Kinder Haake
The untimely deaths of John A. Yagiela, DDS, PhD, Distinguished Emeritus Professor of Dental Anesthesiology, and Susan Kinder Haake, DMD, MDentSc, PhD, Professor in the Sections of Periodontics and Oral Biology, are a great loss to the School of Dentistry. The School held memorials in their honor, which drew hundreds of guests. Funds also have been set up at the School of Dentistry in their honor. Dr. David Wong’s Saliva Research Opens New Doors on Untapped Field
In the weekly science journal, Nature, Dr. David Wong and his team were recently recognized for their breakthrough discoveries in the analysis of saliva. Their ground breaking research in this untapped field has demonstrated that this bodily fluid can be used to detect potential health issues and conditions elsewhere in the body, in a non-invasive manner. Dr. Spolsky Helps Develop Oral Health Curriculum
At the end of January 2012, Dr. Vladimir W. Spolsky received a development award from the American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC) to develop a competency-based module for oral health in medicine model curriculum that will be disseminated through MedEdPORTAL. Specifically, Dr. Spolsky will develop a PowerPoint presentation entitled, ”What We Know About Tooth Decay and How to Manage It,” which will be targeted to medical students, nursing students, and residents. This is part of the AAMC’s effort to stimulate interprofessional education.
“This opportunity is timely because all of the health professions, specifically the ADEA, AAMC, and even the Health People 2020, are encouraging greater interprofessional education and learning experiences,” says Dr. Spolsky.
Dr. Spolsky is an Associate Professor with the American Board of Dental Public Health and the Vice Chair for the School of Dentistry’s Division of Public Health and Community Dentistry.
Dr. Pirih Appointed Director of Pre-Doctoral Periodontics Clinic Program
Dr. Flavia Pirih, Assistant Professor in Periodontics at the School of Dentistry, was recently appointed the new Director of School of Dentistry’s Pre-Doctoral Periodontics Clinic Program.
After receiving her dental degree at Universidade Federal do Parana in Brazil, Dr. Pirih came to the School of Dentistry and received a PhD in Oral Biology. Upon graduation from UCLA, Dr. Pirih received a master’s degree in Periodontics from the University of Michigan in 2009. Dr. Pirih is currently collaborating with Dr. Sotirios Tetradis to identify the genetic mediators of periodontal disease. Congratulations to Dr. Pirih on her new role.
Dr. Silva Appointed to the Thomas K. Barber Term Endowed Chair
Dr. Daniela Rodrigues Pereira da Silva, DDS, MS, Associate Clinical Professor in the Section of Pediatric Dentistry, has been named the Thomas K. Barber Term Endowed Chair in the Section of Pediatric Dentistry.
The Thomas K. Barber Term Endowed Chair was set-up in memoriam for Dr. Thomas Barber, who was instrumental in establishing and growing the postgraduate training program in pediatric dentistry at the School of Dentistry. Dr. Silva currently serves as the director of the pediatric dentistry residency training programs at Westwood and in San Diego. As the endowed chair holder, Dr. Silva will receive support in the teaching and research activities of the pediatric dentistry section.
We offer our congratulations to Dr. Silva as she continues to foster Dr. Barber’s legacy of success and excellence through this appointment.
