School celebrates 44th Commencement
Congratulations to the graduates of the UCLA School of
Dentistry Class of 2011!
On Sunday, June 5, 2011, faculty and staff conducted the dental school's 44th commencement ceremony. The doctor of dental surgery degree was awarded to 97 candidates. In addition, the school conferred 15 master's degrees and one Ph.D. degree in oral biology and granted 50 certificates to individuals who completed training programs in general dentistry and dental specialties.
Dean No-Hee Park presided over the joyous occasion. Ryan Abelowitz, president of the DDS Class of 2011, delivered a rousing speech in which he made the case that his was the "best class of dental school graduates in the universe." Acting on behalf of a faculty committee, the dean honored Dr. Carol Bibb as the distinguished faculty member of the year for her extraordinary record as an educator, both at UCLA and on the national stage. Dr. Park also took the opportunity during commencement to recognize alumna and longstanding philanthropist Dr. Miki Nam for her special relationship with the school. Dr. Nam encouraged the graduates to do as she had done and find ways to give back to their dental school alma mater. In his commencement address, Albert Carnesale, chancellor emeritus of UCLA, shared remarks both comic and serious about the nature of wisdom conveyed at graduation ceremonies, the history of dentistry, and the meaningful contributions the graduates will make to global health.
Drs. Lawrence Wolinsky, Ronald Mito, Carol Bibb and David Wong were joined by Dr. Robert Duell (a lecturer specially selected by the DDS class) in presenting hoods to the DDS candidates. Dr. Mito was joined by Drs. Colby Smith, Thomas Lee, Eleni Roumanas, Christine Quinn, Nadia Chugal, Eric Sung, James Kelly, Earl Freymiller, Diana Messadi, Eung-Kwon Pae, Clarice Law, Kenneth Troutman and Perry Klokkevold to present the postgraduate certificates. Dr. David Wong and Dr. Cun-Yu Wang awarded the PhD and the MS degrees.
In his closing remarks, Dr. Park echoed the sentiments of many of the day’s speakers; he urged the graduates to make a lifelong commitment to humanitarianism and to find their own unique ways to be of service. Dr. Afsaneh Malaekeh, president of the UCLA Dental Alumni Association, welcomed the graduates to the school's alumni family.
Following the ceremony, family and friends joined the graduates for a festive reception on Royce Quad. Click here for a Commencement 2011 slideshow.
