T90/R90 Current Events and Trainee Accomplishments
Our bi-annual T90/R90 luncheon was held on June 20, 2013 and was very well attended by all the Pre-Doctoral and Post-Doctoral T90/R90 Trainees and Faculty Mentors. Dr. David Wong, the Program Director gave a very useful presentation on how trainees need to prepare for the effort to apply for their own individual F, K or R awards. Two current T90 Trainees, Dr. Jeffrey Kim and Dr. Shebli Mehrazarin gave excellent presentations of their experiences in applying for the NIH independent funding grants and career path advice to the trainee audience.
This year provided us with a new set of challenges and triumphs in our T90/R90 program. We continue to recruit who we feel are the best and brightest to our program.
Construction was completed on the Center for Oral/Head & Neck Cancer Oncology Research, which houses the laboratories for Dr. David Wong, Dr. Yong Kim and Dr. Dean Ho. With first-class technology and highly dedicated post-doctoral, pre-doctoral and volunteer local and international dentist-scientists, the laboratory is up and running with cutting-edge scientific research being done on a daily basis.

We are proud of the work and accomplishments of our current trainees. Our T90 trainees were well represented at the 2013 I/AADR meeting in Seattle this March. In particular, four of our T90 trainees:
Christopher Schafer, recent T90 postdoctoral trainee, Jeffrey Kim, T90 postdoctoral trainee, Jane Park, T90 pre-doctoral trainee and Shebli Mehrzarin, DSTP T90 trainee participated in the NIDCR Trainee Day Poster event at the 2013 IADR. Recent T90 postdoctoral trainee Christopher Schafer was second author on the poster he presented at the NIDCR Trainee Day Poster event at the 2013 IADR. In addition, our T90 postdoctoral trainee Jeffrey Kim attended the ADA, Annual Session in 2012 and the AADR/CADR Annual Meeting & Exhibition in 2012 where he was first author on both an oral presentation at ADA 2012 and a Poster at AADR/CADR 2012.
At the I/AADR General Session 2013 we also hosted a booth for the UCLA School of Dentistry on March 21-22, 2013 where the T90/R90 Coordinator, Muneeza Irfani, with many well-informed School of Dentistry students and T90 trainee volunteers were able to provide hundreds of foreign and local dental students, faculty and scientists with information and flyers about all the academic and research training programs at UCLA School of Dentistry.
We encourage our T90 trainees in their senior years of their respective training tracks to apply for individual NIDCR research training and career development programs. Shebli Mehrazarin, 5th year DSTP trainee, will be applying in the April 2013 cycle for an individual F30 application. Jeffrey Kim DDS, PhD, a postdoc trainee will be applying for the K99/R00 Pathway to Independence Award this fall. Aria Eshraghi a pre-doctoral trainee who had been on the T32 award was awarded an F31 award from NIH.
Our annual T90-R90 a luncheon was held on October 10, 2012 and allowed trainees to connect and network with each other and has proven to be successful with high attendance by both trainees and mentors.
We also continue to track the trainees that have matriculated through our program. Omar Khalid PhD, a fully matriculated T90 postdoctoral trainee is continuing his work within research at a non-for-profit institute in the field of bioinformatics and stem cell research. Janice Yoshizawa PhD, a matriculated T90 Trainee continues her research at the UCLA Micro-Array Core Lab where she is part of a research program. Our former T32 pre-doctoral trainee Peter Lillehoj PhD is now an assistant professor in the School of Engineering at University of Michigan.
