Ralph & Shirley Shapiro

Over the years, Shirley and Ralph Shapiro have generously supported the School of Dentistry's students and faculty, by establishing an Endowed Scholarship as well as the No-Hee Park Endowed Chair at the School of Dentistry. However, their philanthropic endeavors do not stop with the School of Dentistry.

The Shapiros have a total of endowed eight (8) chairs at UCLA; have contributed to 18 different schools/units and have been giving to the campus for over 45 years. In recognition of their commitment to UCLA, the Shirley & Ralph Shapiro Fountain, near Royce Hall, was named in their honor.

Other endowments and gifts include the $1 million Shapiro Endowed Directorship at the Fowler Museum, as well as numerous endowments and fellowships, specifically in the arts and library sciences. The Shapiros’ generosity to the UCLA community has touched individuals at every level, including Deans, faculty and students. The couple’s foundation, the Shapiro Family Charitable Foundation, supports a range of programs including educational, Jewish, and social service organizations.

Shirley and Ralph Shapiro are life-long Bruins, having both attended UCLA for their undergraduate degrees and Ralph for his JD.

Mrs. Shapiro received her B.A. degree in Education from UCLA in 1959. She is a longtime supporter of UCLA Arts, providing Endowed Music Scholarships, and serving as a Member of the Board of Visitors of the School of Art & Architecture. She is a Member of the Board of the Emmett Center on Climate Change and the Environment at the UCLA School of Law, as well as the Board of Advisors of the UCLA Fowler Museum of Cultural History

Mr. Shapiro was born in Lithuania and immigrated to Los Angeles with his family, where he attended local public schools. He received a degree in Business and Finance (1953) from UCLA. He returned to the UCLA School of Law, graduating in 1958 after serving in the U.S. Army. He was the recipient of the UCLA Law School’s Alumnus of the Year Award in 1983, and again in 2008. He was an Attorney and a Certified Public Accountant (both retired status).

Ralph also serves on the Centennial Campaign Committees for the Schools of Dentistry and Law.
