2015 Recipient

Dr. Margaret Quon Pan, Class of 1968

Dr. Pan was part of the very first class that graduated from UCLA School of Dentistry in 1968 – even more astounding, she was the only female student in that class. She was a pioneer in the dental field and held her own in a classroom full of men. The dental school has come a long way from 50 years ago and today, our DDS classes are roughly 50 percent men and 50 percent women.

Pan was born in China in 1939 and immigrated to the United States at 13-years-old where she completed her schooling in the state of Kentucky. She enrolled at UCLA in 1955 and received a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Home Economics Education in 1959. She decided to continue her education and went onto earn a Master’s of Science degree in Nutrition and stayed on as a lecturer for two years in the same subject. Her passion for learning pushed her to apply to the new dental school that had just been built on campus. In 1964, Pan become one of 28 students in the inaugural class at the UCLA School of Dentistry.

Following dental school, Pan completed an Endodontics Specialty program at the Long Beach Veterans Hospital. She then went onto work in private practice in Endodontics for the next 30 years. Currently, she is enjoying retirement and has taken up oil painting and being a grandmother to her two grandsons, Patrick and Tyler.

Pan has also been a loyal and dedicated member of the School of Dentistry’s Board of Counselors for nearly a decade. On behalf of the Alumni Affairs Association and the entire UCLA Dentistry community, we wish to recognize Dr. Margaret Quon Pan as the 2015 Alumnus of the Year – a well-deserved honor.
