Hello UCLA School of Dentistry Alumni,

We are seeking Los Angeles area UCLA Dental Alumni to serve as hosts and co-hosts for this year's “Dinner for 12 Dental Students” program.

Last year, alums hosted over 1/3 of the school’s dental students and all had a great time.  The program is modeled after the Dinner for 12 Strangers program that UCLA has hosted since 1968.  Although the program traditionally hosts 12 students, the hosts can choose to limit that number to fit within their comfort level.

The program has been very successful in bringing alumni, faculty and students from all generations together to enjoy good food and great conversation. Arth Patel, a dental student who participated in last year’s event said, “Dinner for 12 was a wonderful experience that allowed me to interact with practicing alumni outside of a school setting. The event provides students with an opportunity to build long lasting relationships with alumni and to ask questions that may be relevant to their practice. We are very lucky to be welcomed with open arms and to get to know faculty and alumni on a personal level!”

Dr. Carol Bibb ‘78, Associate Dean of Student Affairs and one of last year’s Dinner co-hosts says, “I had a memorable experience hosting a Dinner for 12 Students last summer, and I encourage all alumni in the area to participate this summer. You will enjoy sharing a meal with a random group of our incredible students, and their appreciation of your hospitality will be heartfelt. Based on our experience last year, I suggest optimizing the host to student ratio by partnering with a fellow alum as co-hosts. Please feel free to contact me directly at DinnerFor12@gmail.com if you have any questions about this wonderful opportunity.”

To ensure each group is diverse, the students are chosen at random. They are then assigned to their alumni host, who will also be selected randomly.

The alumni member typically provides the dinner location, food or financially covers the cost of dinner for the students. Last year’s dinners ranged from backyard picnics to dinner at the host’s private office.

We are also seeking co-hosts, as it is advantageous to have additional alums at each dinner to allow for more conversation and varying points of view.

This year’s program will be held on the evenings of July 29 & 30 as well as August 12 & 13.  Volunteers are asked to host a dinner on one of these dates.
