The 2018 season’s Dinner for 12 Dental Students was a resounding success. More than 120 pre-doctoral students were hosted by over 20 enthusiastic alumni at evening functions throughout the month of July. The hosted dinners provided an opportunity for the dentists-to-be to meet and network with practicing dentists in a casual, welcoming setting. Alumni generously provided dinner and valuable knowledge about organized dentistry to groups of 10-12 students who in turn represented the UCLA School of Dentistry and updated the alumni on happenings at the school.

The purpose of the program was to create a smaller, friendlier community within the dental school and its alumni in the greater Los Angeles area. Alumni were encouraged to invite fellow dentists and specialists to enhance the dinner experience of the students. By having multiple perspectives and mentors to hear from, the students were able to have more one-on-one conversations with alumni that were otherwise more difficult to achieve last year.

The program is modeled after the Dinner for 12 Strangers program that UCLA started in 1968, which brings together alumni, faculty and students from all generations. Although the program traditionally hosts 12 students, the hosts can choose to limit that number to fit within their comfort level. “It was an extremely rewarding and encouraging experience to be able to interact with alumni who have been through the same experiences and could provide invaluable feedback on what to expect after dental school," said Alison Ozaki, a pre-doctoral student.

Alumni enjoyed sharing stories of their time in dental school and hearing how things have changed. It gave an opportunity for alumni to reach out to their classmates to help encourage and inspire current dental students. Dental students appreciated the hosts’ hospitality and found the additional guests from the dental professional very helpful. All in all, the event was a great success and the hope is to increase alumni and student participation in the coming years.
