This course will provide an introduction to Integrative Medicine that combines standard medicine with the Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) that have been shown to be safe and effective. Dental acupuncture has been recognized by California as a service that is within the scope of service of a dentist if certain prescribed requirements are met. Currently, UCLA is the only institution that provides the instruction required by the California Dental Board.

Learning Objectives:
  • Introduce Integrative Medicine (Complementary and Alternative Medicine CAM, TCM, and Dental Acupuncture) in managing Orofacial Pain and TMD as well as application in every day dentistry
  • Motivate the participants to expand their understanding and obtain the appropriate credentialing to practice dental acupuncture
Course Curriculum:
  • Introduction to the biopsychosocial model of pain and the current western medicine approach (oral splints, Botox, Trigger Points, physical medicine protocols, etc.) in the management of  facial pain and TMD
  • Introduction to the TCM model of pain and current eastern medicine approach (acupuncture, herbs, tongue/pulse diagnosis, 5 Element Theory, etc.) in the management of facial pain and TMD
  • Other modalities to be discussed:
  • Needle based therapy (acupuncture, dry needling, trigger point injections, Botox)
  • Non-needle-based therapy (magnets, TENs units, acupressure, Gua sha, jaw/neck muscle stretching exercise, myofascial protocols, cold sprays, Voltaren gel massage and TCM diet/herbal supplements)
