Program Overview

Peter Moy, DMD
Program Director

The Surgical Implant Dentistry Advanced Clinical Training Program is a 1-2 year program providing highly motivated international dental practitioners the opportunity to obtain basic and advanced training in the field of Implant Dentistry.  This training will include comprehensive didactic and clinical instructions including patient contact on surgical placement and restoration of dental implants, hard and soft tissue augmentation procedures and reconstruction techniques for the “Esthetic Zone”. This program is designed for those with the desires for additional surgical curricular and hands-on training in treating complex and comprehensive cases in Implant Dentistry. This program will provide each trainee with a thorough understanding of basic principles in Implant Dentistry and using the fundamental techniques taught to manage both the simple and complex implant cases. It is also intended to generate dental practitioners who can return to their native countries and provide sustained leadership in the field of Implant Dentistry.

The didactic portion of the program includes both basic and clinical sciences in Implant Dentistry given throughout the academic year with concentration of basic science curriculum in the months of January, February and March. Didactic topics include all surgical and prosthetic areas in Implant Dentistry with emphasis on hard and soft tissue management, physical diagnosis as it relates to co-morbidity factors affecting prognosis of dental implants, treatment planning, oral radiology, literature review, laboratory principles as it relates to Implant Dentistry and practice management principles. The course directors will provide feedback to the program director regarding the postgraduate’s competency and participatory levels in the form of grades and/or assessment reports.

All patient care provided by trainees is comprehensive and proctored. The trainee will be afforded every opportunity to enhance their clinical skills and knowledge within various dental disciplines as they pertain to the field of Implant Dentistry. Faculty coverage is provided at all clinic sessions as well as laboratory support to complete the prosthetic aspects of treatment. The majority of the postgraduates’ clinical experience will occur in the UCLA Surgical Dental Center and the Brentwood OMS Center Extension.

Applicants who have already completed a "surgical" residency (either in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery or Periodontology) should apply to the Advanced Surgical Implant Dentistry ACT.

A certificate signed by the program director and dean of the school of dentistry is awarded upon successful completion of the program. A certificate of attendance is awarded upon successful completion of the program. This certificate is not the same as the postgraduate program certificate awarded to full-time international postgraduates in specialty training as a qualification for recognition by the Commission on Dental Accreditation.
