Unity and Mutual Respect

Dear SOD Community,
The horrific events in Charlottesville, Virginia over the past weekend stand as a bitter testament to the terror that hatred and bigotry can beget. I join today with UC President Janet Napolitano and other UCLA deans who, in the wake of these events, have publicly denounced white supremacy in all of its forms and the violent, hateful acts of its followers.
As painful as it was to see the images of Nazi and Confederate flags, hear the racist chants and slogans, and witness the abhorrent violence, let these events serve as a call to action for the SOD community. It is more important than ever that each of us reaffirm our commitment to the principles of inclusivity and the valuing of each other’s differences that define this great university.
Let this commitment be evident in the way we treat each other and the manner in which we address our differences – always with dignity, mutual respect, and the greater good of our school as the goal.
Lastly, may we all have the courage to speak out against injustices both large and small, and help ensure that it is always safe to do so in our community of learning.
