Caring for Our Fellow Angelenos

This past October marked the fourth year that the UCLA School of Dentistry has provided free dental care at the large-scale event, Care Harbor, to hundreds of Angelenos in desperate need of basic oral health services.Reuben Kim at the annual Care Harbor 2013 clinic

The School of Dentistry was one of dozens of healthcare providers in the Los Angeles area that came together during Care Harbor to provide free medical, dental, and vision care to adults, children, and families. Starting on Monday, October 28, 2013, thousands of people lined up outside the Los Angeles Sports Arena to reserve spots at one of the free clinic days, starting on Thursday, October 31st, and culminating on Sunday, November 3rd.

The final number of people served this past  October eclipsed past years, with dental services in very high demand. People had the opportunity to have teeth examined, extracted, and even filled. The  School of Dentistry was joined by several other dental care providers, and the group’s cumulative efforts resulted in roughly 400 patients seen on Thursday, 500 patients seen on Friday, 500 on Saturday, and 500 on Sunday.

A Resource for the CommunityFree screening and treatment program in Koreatown

On Saturday, Oct. 12, inside the lobby of Wilshire Bank in Koreatown, nearly 250 local residents lined up for oral health screening appointments offered free of charge by School of Dentistry students, residents and faculty.

For many of the primarily Korean participants in the low-income community, this was their first dental check-up in several years – a factor that prompted the bank to collaborate with UCLA to bring free dental care to its neighbors. The new partnership provides screening and treatment days every year for a total of five years.

About half of the individuals, who were screened, were referred to receive free follow-up treatment a week later, on Oct. 19. The treatment was performed at the UCLA Dental Clinics in Westwood, with Wilshire Bank providing the patients with free transportation.

Please read the full press release regarding the partnership.

This event would not have been possible without the assistance and expertise of students, residents, faculty and staff. Here is a snapshot of the dental services that we delivered on Saturday, October 19, 2013:

Total number of patients treated: 115

Total number of procedures delivered: 334

Total number of direct restorations (adults and children): 113

Total number of extractions/biopsies: 76

Total number of quadrants of scaling and root planing and phophies (adults and children): 69

Total number of endodontic procedures: 29

Total number of comprehensive treatment plans for patients with complex dental needs: 12

Total number of radiographic exams in the Oral Radiology Clinic: 35 (does not include radiographs taken on the general clinic floor or specialty clinics)

As a result of everyone's enthusiasm and willingness to work as a team, we exceeded our initial goal of providing one dental procedure per patient for 100 patients by more than three times.

Thank you to the individuals on this list, who helped make the October 19th treatment day so successful.

Grateful for New Friends

International students invited to Thanksgiving DinnerDr. Oariona Lowe, Ct. '84 (PD) – a Board of Counselors member, volunteer faculty in the Section of Pediatric Dentistry, and a member of the Friends of Pediatric Dentistry support group – graciously hosted international students for Thanksgiving Dinner.

Dr. Steve Lee, PPID Director, put the students in touch with Dr. Lowe. She and her husband, Dr. Evangelos Rossopoulos, cooked a Thanksgiving feast for them, since they were far from home. The group enjoyed learning about each other's cultures and the students were grateful for the hospitality.

A Welcome Resource

Teeth vending machine in the general clinicThe fourth floor lab has received a very welcome addition. A tooth vending machine was installed, so dental students are able to purchase additional practice teeth conveniently, without having to go to the student store. We are the only dental school west of the Mississippi to offer this unique and convenient resource. In addition to making day-to-day tasks easier for our current students, this is a very strong recruitment feature.

Thank you to the students, faculty, and staff who helped make this happen.

Taking Pride in Our WorkClinic Pride Day in November

A Clinic Pride Day was held on the morning of Saturday, November 16, 2013. Volunteer students, faculty and staff members worked hard and diligently to clean the 2nd and 3rd floor clinics as well as the 3rd floor laboratory.
