Dean No-Hee ParkDear Students, Faculty, Residents, Trainees, Staff and Friends,

Spring is always an exciting time at the UCLA School of Dentistry. Commencement is around the corner, our first year dental students have hit their stride, dozens of residents and international trainees are finishing up advanced training and our MS and PhD candidates are busy defending their theses.

This spring quarter is especially significant, as we will be kicking off the School’s 50th Anniversary Celebration during our Annual Alumni Events at the CDA’s Spring Session in the next few weeks. Fifty years is an important milestone. Maturity has been reached. Our education and training programs, research initiatives, and patient care and public service commitments have hit new heights of excellence. To commemorate this milestone, we have planned a very exciting schedule of events. I encourage you to join us in these festivities.

In June, we will be holding our 47th Commencement Ceremony. This year we are honored to have in attendance, Chancellor Gene Block and Mrs. Block; Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Pritzker; and Dr. Gary Parker ’77, Cert. (Oral Surgery) ’82 who is also the Commencement Speaker and a 2014 UCLA Medal recipient.

There were also several impressive highlights to report on from the last few months. The UCLA chapter of the American Student Dental Association (ASDA) swept the 2014 ASDA Annual Session, winning numerous awards as well as 3rd year dental student, Kris Mendoza, being appointed the 2014-2015 National ASDA President. We have also been awarded several new grants and contracts, including $2.36 million from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health to administer dental care to HIV/AIDS patients through the Ryan White Program.

Several of our faculty members were recognized for their dedication to teaching, including Dr. Flavia Pirih, Dr. David Wong, and Dr. Earl Freymiller who received a Distinguished Teaching Award for Senate Faculty by the UCLA Academic Senate Committee on Teaching. Our research faculty continue to pioneer new breakthroughs and spearhead cutting-edge research projects.

Thank you for taking the time to read this letter, and I encourage everyone to learn more about what makes the UCLA School of Dentistry such an amazing place to study, learn, educate, and work. This is an exciting time for the entire UCLA School of Dentistry community, so let’s celebrate.

Sincerely,
