Dr. Kathryn Atchison, Professor in the Division of Public Health and Community Dentistry Dr. Kathryn Atchison, Professor in the Division of Public Health and Community Dentistry and Vice Provost for New Collaborative Initiatives at UCLA, has been tapped to join the Office of the Director of the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) on a volunteer basis. Dr. Atchison began the six-month volunteer role on July 1st, to help develop strategies aimed at strengthening NIDCR’s translational pipeline — translating research discoveries into new tools and treatment — and identify potential partnerships between the public and private sectors to help the agency achieve its goals.

Dr. Atchison has substantial experience conducting and leading collaborative multidisciplinary research projects. She has published extensively on outcomes assessment and quality of care issues, such as perceptions of oral health and the development and evaluation of psychosocial outcome measures, for which she developed the Geriatric/General Oral Health Assessment Index.

Dr. Dean Ho, Professor in the Section of Oral Biology and Co-Director of the Weintraub Center for Reconstructive Biotechnology, received the 2014 International Association for Dental Research (IADR) Young Investigator Award for his significant contribution to the field of dentistry research. His team was the first to demonstrate that nanodiamonds could be used as targeted drug delivery agents for a broad range of cancers.

Dr. Takahiro Ogawa, Professor in the Section of ProsthodonticsDr. Takahiro Ogawa, Professor in the Section of Prosthodontics and a member of the Weintraub Center for Reconstructive Biotechnology, received the 2014 IADR Distinguished Scientist Award in Research in Prosthodontics and Implants. He is widely recognized as a pioneer in photoenergy-mediated activation of implants materials, known as photofunctionalization of implants, which is expected to have significant scientific and therapeutic impact on implant treatment in dental and orthopedic fields. 

Drs. Ho and Ogawa received their awards at the opening ceremonies of the 92nd IADR General Session & Exhibition on June 25, 2014, in Cape Town, South Africa. Both IADR awards are generously supported by P&G Professional Oral Health, Crest Oral-B. Along with the awards, a monetary prize and a plaque were given to each recipient. Drs. Ho and Ogawa were two of 16 IADR Distinguished Scientist Awards, one of the highest honors bestowed by IADR.

Dr. Alan L. Felsenfeld, Professor of Clinical Dentistry in the Section of Oral and Maxillofacial SurgeryDr. Alan L. Felsenfeld, Professor of Clinical Dentistry in the Section of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery received a recognition award for being a top reviewer for Dentoalveolar Surgery in the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery out of a pool of nearly 400 reviewers in 2013. This was the second year he received the top reviewer award.

Additionally, he received a “Certificate of Excellence in Reviewing” for his work in 2013. Dr. Felsenfeld has been a reviewer for the journal for approximately 11 years.

Dr. Christine L. Quinn, Clinical Professer & Chair of the Section of Dental AnesthesiologyDr. Christine L. Quinn, Clinical Professer and Chair of the Section of Dental Anesthesiology received the American Society of Dentist Anesthesiologists 2014 Leonard M. Monheim Award – the most prestigious award the society gives out. The award is intended to recognize dentists who have made outstanding contributions to the discipline of anesthesiology, benefitting the dental profession.

The Distinguished Service Award is named in honor of Leonard M. Monheim, DDS, whose many contributions to the art and science of anesthesiology and visionary leadership helped lay the foundation for a specialty in anesthesiology for dentistry. Dr. Quinn, the third UCLA Dentistry faculty member to receive this award, was recognized in May 2014 during the ASDA 2014 Annual Scientific Session in Boston.

Dr. Shane White, Professor, in the Section of Endodontics Dr. Shane White, Professor, in the Section of Endodontics was re-elected for a second term as chair of The UC Retirement System (UCRS) Advisory Board. The Board develops ideas and new approaches to the provisions of UCRS benefits and communicates them to the President of the University. The UCRS Advisory Board discusses concerns relating to all members, participants, and their beneficiaries.

In addition, Dr White recently completed two terms as Chair of the UC system-wide Task Force on Investment and Retirement (TFIR). TFIR monitors and advises on policies and proposals relating to investment and retirement issues at UC.

Dr. Francesco Chiappelli, Professor in the Section of Oral BiologyDr. Francesco Chiappelli, Professor in the Section of Oral Biology and Special Assistant to the Vice Chancellor for Graduate Education was given a honorary doctorate degree in Endodontics from the Center for Research and Dental Studies IPSEMG for his work on the development and establishment of the field of evidence-based endodontics.




Dr. Mo Kang, Professor and Chair of the Division of Constitutive & Regenerative SciencesDr. Mo Kang, Professor and Chair of the Division of Constitutive and Regenerative Sciences and the Jack A. Weichman Chair in Endodontics was appointed as a regular member of the Oral, Dental, Craniofacial Study (ODCS) section within the National Institutes for Health Center for Scientific Review. The ODCS study section reviews applications on oral microbiology, oral immunology, periodontology, cariology, salivary gland biology, pathophysiology and clinical studies of oral structures and restorative dentistry.

Dr. Shen Hu, Associate Professor and MS Program Advisor in the Division of Oral Biology and Medicine was asked to serve as Associated Editor of the Journal of Integrated Omics and Senior Editorial Member for the American Journal of Stem Cells. Dr. Hu has authored and co-authored more than 70 research articles and book chapters. He has been an editorial member or regular reviewer for multiple other scientific journals.



Dr. Nadia Chugal, Clinical Professor in the Section of Endodontics was invited to participate at the American Association of Endodontists Annual Session in Washington DC,  where she delivered a keynote lecture on May 3, 2014, entitled, “Saving Teeth: Predictability and Prognosis”. 




Dr. Dean Ho was invited to speak at the Aspen Cancer Conference – a conference widely regarded as one of the most prestigious and exclusive meetings in the country. Attendance at the conference is based on recommendation by the Scientific Advisory Board, which is comprised of multiple Nobel Prize winners and the top cancer researchers in the world. Dr. Ho’s speech, “Diamond-Based Nanomedicine for Enhanced Chemotherapy and Imaging,” discussed different nanodiamond platforms and their therapeutic benefits.

Dr. Ho and his wife also welcomed a baby girl this past April. Emeline Kaitlyn Ho was born April 28th, coming in at 7 pounds, 9.9 oz. Congratulations to the Ho Family.

Welcome to Our New Group Practice Director

The UCLA School of Dentistry welcomed a new Group Practice Director. Effective September 1stDr. Barry Margolis (pictured below) replaced Dr. Joseph Chang who retired at the end of the 2013-2014 fiscal year. 

Dr. Barry Margolis - New Group Practice DirectorDr. Margolis is a recent transplant from Massachusetts, having practiced dentistry for over 30 years in West Newton, Massachusetts. A graduate of Tufts School of Dentistry, Barry is interested in laser dentistry, Invisalign, and implant restorations.

Dr. Joseph Chang, UCLA DDS Class of ‘75, retired after more than 10 cumulative years of service at the School of Dentistry. Following dental school, he went on to be one of the first residents in the General Practice and Hospital Dentistry Program with an emphasis on dental anesthesiology. After his residency training, he started a private practice and maintained this practice until 2008. He also held a Directorship position in the same program where he received his residency certificate. From 2008 until his retirement he held the position of a Group Practice Director.

We look forward to having Dr. Margolis on the team and his expertise is a valuable addition to our clinical operations. Best of luck to Dr. Chang on his retirement and we thank him for his years of service.
