Alum Recognized for Lifetime of Giving Back

Alumnus, Dr. Russ Webb, Class of '78, Certificate in Oral Surgery '81, was honored with the 2014 California Dental Association (CDA) Foundation Humanitarian Award for his lifetime of incredible generosity and his commitment to giving back. Dr. Webb's legacy of public service began during dental school where he would volunteer at dental clinics for the underserved. It was also in dental school where he met his wife, Kathi, and from then on the couple have made a lifetiime commitment to providing much-needed dental care to the community.

Dr. Webb, pictured above with Kathi, serves on the Board of the Counselors at the School of Dentistry as the Vice Chair. Over the years, Russ and Kathi Webb have generously supported School of Dentistry's students by establishing an Endowed Scholarship. The Webbs are also ardent supporters of UCLA Athletics. The Webbs’ generosity and service to the UCLA community have touched individuals at every level, including faculty, students, administrators and staff.

In addition to his commitment to the School, Russ has been instrumental in building the CDA Foundation's annual activities, CDA Cares, health fairs that provide dental care to hundreds of individuals every year. Congratulations to Dr. Russ Webb on your much-deserved award. Thank you to both Russ and Kathi for your support of the School and your commitment to improving the oral health of the community.

2015 Alumnus of the Year

The UCLA Alumni Association is proud to announce the 2015 Alumnus of the Year – Dr. Margaret Quon Pan, Class of 1968. Dr. Pan was part of the very first class that graduated from the UCLA School of Dentistry in 1968 – even more astounding, she was the only female student in that class. She was a pioneer in the dental field and held her own in a classroom full of men. The dental school has come a long way from 50 years ago, and today, our DDS classes are roughly 50 percent men and 50 percent women. She may not have known it then, but Dr. Pan paved the way for future female dental students at UCLA.

Dr. Pan has also been a loyal and dedicated member of the School of Dentistry’s Board of Counselors for nearly a decade. She will be honored for her achievements at the Annual Alumni Day events on Saturday, May 2 at the Hilton Anaheim Hotel. The reunion classes of 1970, 1975, 1980, 1985, 1990, 1995, 2000, 2005 and 2010 will also be recognized.

Breakfast of Champions

The Alumni Association welcomed more than 70 dental school alums back to campus at the Annual Fall Alumni Breakfast. Alums gathered in the lobby of the general clinic on Saturday, October 18, to reminisce and network with fellow alumni. Following the social breakfast, guests enjoyed a lecture by Dr. David Guichet, Class of 1986, who spoke about Digitally Enhanced Implant Dentistry. Dr. Guichet is a Diplomat of the American Board of Prosthodontics and a graduate of the UCLA DDS and Maxillofacial Prosthetics Residency programs.

After the breakfast took place, guests were invited to make their way up to the Sunset Canyon Recreation Center for the Annual All-School Picnic, an event that kicks off the start of the academic year for all dental students, faculty and staff.

UCLA Alums and Dental Students Give Back at CDA Cares

On November 21 and 22, several UCLA alums and dental students volunteered at a large-scale dental fair and treatment event put on by the California Dental Association Foundation. The event, called CDA Cares, is a program that allows dentists, dental professionals and other volunteers, to provide dental services at no charge to more than 2,000 patients at each event.

The November event was held in Pomona, CA where roughly 1,800 patients received care and more than 12,000 procedures were delivered. A dozen UCLA alumni were on-site delivering dental care to individuals who were in dire need of treatment and nearly 50 current UCLA dental students volunteered at the event assisting those administering care. Special recognition goes to Matt Stephens, Class of 2017, who coordinated the dental students’ participation, to Melanie Gullet ’83 for providing details, and to CDA for providing photos. The students also pitched in to secure a $500 donation for the Pomona event.

The next CDA Cares event is taking place in Sacramento at the end of March. UCLA students are planning to attend this event and hope to secure additional donations.
