Retirement of Dr. Neal Garrett

Dr. Neal Garrett, Professor and Associate Dean of Education and Faculty Development, will be retiring on June 29, 2015 from the UCLA School of Dentistry. Since becoming Associate Dean of Education and Faculty Development in 2012, Dr. Garrett has worked tirelessly to maintain the excellence of the School’s academic curriculum. For the School’s first major effort in inter-professional education at the pre-doctoral level, he engaged faculty from the Schools of medicine and nursing to have our 3rd year dental students join their medical student peers in a course on Systems-based Healthcare.

Dr. Garrett has served the UCLA School of Dentistry for 25 years. He holds a PhD, an MA and a BA, and has served the School as Associate Dean of Education and Faculty Development, as Director of the Jane and Jerry Weintraub Center for Reconstructive Biotechnology (which he also helped establish), and as Interim Chair of the Division of Advanced Prosthodontics, Biomaterials and Hospital Dentistry.

During his tenure, Dr. Garrett has received innumerable grants for his research and, in 2008, he was awarded the Distinguished Scientist Award for Research in Prosthodontics and Implants, International Association for Dental Research. He has represented the School at numerous lectures throughout the country and abroad and has published more than 100 research articles and abstracts and has authored several book chapters.

Stepping into Dr. Garrett’s position as the new Associate Dean of Education and Faculty Development is Dr. Diana Messadi, effective July 1, 2015. She is currently Professor and Chair for the Section of Oral Medicine and Orofacial Pain in the Division of Oral Biology and Medicine, and Co-Director of the Student Oral Medicine Clinic and Co-Director of the Oral Medicine Faculty Group Practice.

The School would like to thank Dr. Garrett for his valuable contributions, and in wishing him a long and happy retirement. He will be missed by all.

Combatting Early Childhood Caries

Dr. Francisco Ramos-Gomez, Professor in the Section of Pediatric Dentistry, was recently interviewed by the Dental Tribune for his work on a landmark policy that would provide better guidance and recommendations for oral healthcare providers of pregnant women and young children.

Dr. Ramos-Gomez was one of the lead authors of a new guideline on perinatal and infant oral health, which was submitted for adoption at the General Assembly of the 2014 World Dental Federation congress in New Delhi. The policy has been in the making for four years and its authors hope it will help prevent early childhood caries and the prevalence of dental disease during childhood.

During the interview, Ramos-Gomez discussed the inadequacies in dental care in developing countries; oral health challenges facing prenatal women and infants; tools available to combat poor oral health; and he need for inter-collaboration between other healthcare providers and dentists. The full article can be read here

The group is tasked with administering the CCEPR program. He has served in numerous leadership positions within the California Dental Association and the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. He has been a faculty member since 1978.
