Recognizing Excellence in Dentistry, Research, & Leadership

Academic scholarship has been a large part of the legacy that Dr. No-Hee Park will leave behind when he steps down as dean in June. To honor his many accomplishments and everything he has done for our students, UCLA Dentistry's Board of Counselors has created the Dr. No-Hee Park Awards for Excellence. These scholarship awards will be given to the top dental students who have exhibited excellence in the art and science of dentistry, research, and leadership. The campaign goal is $1 million and we are optimistic that we will reach our goal to support our future dental leaders by helping them lower their debt upon graduation. We are encouraging all alumni, faculty, staff, and students to participate in this campaign.

Oral Surgery Creates Endowed Chair & Clinic Receives a Face-lift

Thanks to our generous alumni and friends, we are half way to our goal for the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Alumni and Friends Endowed Chair Campaign. This new endowed chair would support an outstanding faculty member in the Section of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. The chair will provide invaluable support above and beyond their salary for use in research, teaching and/or service activities. Endowed chairs are a powerful recruitment tool to help grow our programs and provide funds that continue to attract the best and brightest to our internationally recognized faculty.

Additionally, we have launched a top-to-bottom renovation of the Oral and Maxillofacial Clinic, which will have honorary naming signage to recognize all the donors who give to the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Alumni and Friends Endowed Chair Fund. The remodeled space will have three brand new operating rooms, one conference room and eight operatories. As part of this renovation campaign, additional naming opportunities include: the entire clinic, one conference room, three operating rooms and eight cubicles.

A special thank you to Dr. Howard Park for chairing this campaign. For more information about our naming opportunities, please contact Mallory Gompert, Director of Development, at (310) 206-6079 or

Giving Back to the Community

A group of UCLA dental students gave up their well-earned Saturday on February 27th to provide assistance at a free clinic day for homeless people in Los Angeles. The dental students assisted part-time Lecturer in the Section of Restorative Dentistry, Dr. Jay Grossman, with his Homeless Not Toothless non-profit program. The group provided $29,000 worth of free dental treatment. Thank you to the DDS students and Dr. Grossman for giving back to the community.

Alum Receives Award for Service & Commitment

Arthur Nimmo receiving award

Dr. Arthur Nimmo AP '83, was honored by the State University of New York (SUNY) at Oneonta as an Alumni of Distinction. Alum Product Makes Top Mouthwash List

Dr. Harold Katz ’75, had his mouthwash, TheraBreath Mouthwash, named on two crowdsourced “best of” lists. The lists, which placed TheraBreath in the no. 1 and no. 2 spots on the list of "The 10 Best Mouthwashes" are largely determined based on user opinion. Dr. Katz received his Bachelor’s degree, DDS degree and a degree in Bacteriology, all from UCLA. He is a recognized expert in the fields of bad breath, dry mouth, and tonsil stones.

Home for the Holidays

Dr. Oariona Lowe PD ’84, a part-time Lecturer in the Section of Pediatric Dentistry, and her husband, Dr. Evangelos Rossopoulos, hosted a group of international UCLA dental students over the Winter 2015-16 break. The couple held a holiday party for the students, who couldn't be with their families, so they had somewhere special to enjoy the break. Thank you to Dr. Lowe and Dr. Rossopoulos for opening up your home to our students.
