Winter 2016 eNewsletter

Dear Students, Residents, Trainees, Faculty, Staff, Alumni and Friends,

As we spring forward and get closer to the 2016 commencement, I am filled with mixed emotions. This year’s graduation will be my eighteenth and last as standing dean. The past two decades behind the dean’s desk have been the most fulfilling and rewarding of my career. The Chancellor’s Office is in the process of filling the position and over the last two weeks, extensive interviews were conducted with several qualified candidates. Brief/informal feedback on the candidates will be accepted from the dental school community until Thursday, March 17th and can be sent to this email address.

This past winter quarter has been very eventful. At the end of February, we held a well-attended Research Day where we welcomed six outside speakers from leading research institutes and held a research poster competition. I want to thank the Office of Research for planning such a valuable forum where cutting-edge research topics were shared with the entire dental school community and our research colleagues. To date, our new and continuing research contracts and grants received hit nearly $17 million for the ’15-’16 fiscal year. UCLA Dentistry continues to be the leader among dental schools for research funding.

Congratulations to our ASDA Chapter on once again bringing home several top awards from their annual meeting, including best website and newsletter. Another group of students has been working hard to further develop the student-run program, Operation Bruin Smiles. The program was established to help offset the cost of quality dental care for UCLA student veterans and former foster youth. The program recently received several grants including one for $5,000 from the ADA Foundation, which will go towards patient care and supplies. Another exciting achievement for the Operation Bruin Smiles team is that they just launched a UCLA Spark campaign on March 12 to raise $10,000 in 30 days. I have pledged that the School of Dentistry will match every dollar raised through the campaign, up to $10,000. If you are interested in helping to further build their patient care fund, please consider giving to their Spark Campaign.

We did receive some sad news at the end of 2015. One of our most beloved professor emeriti passed away on November 17th, Dr. Harold Hargis. A memorial service was held on January 9th where the dental school celebrated his memory and life’s accomplishments.

We currently have two exciting campaigns going on. One is to raise funds for three scholarship awards to be given to top dental students who have exhibited excellence in the art and science of dentistry, research, and leadership. The other is to raise funds for a new endowed chair in oral and maxillofacial surgery and to refurbish the oral surgery clinic. We will continue to update the dental school community on the progress of these campaigns.

We have several upcoming events that I want to bring to your attention. The annual AADR meeting is taking place in Los Angeles this year and kicks-off on Wednesday, March 16th. The dental school is holding a special reception at the Los Angeles Convention Center on Thursday, March 17th. More details can be found here. We also have our annual “Alumni Day at the CDA” taking place on Saturday, May 14th in Anaheim. This event requires an RSVP and more details can be found here.

Thank you for taking the time to read this eNewsletter. Although I am stepping down as dean at the end of this fiscal year, I have decided to return as dean emeriti and will continue my research in aging and oral cancer.
