Alum and Family Recognized for their Commitment to Humanity

Dr. Gary Parker, Class of 1977, along with his wife, Susan, and their two children, Carys, and Wesley, have received the Daily Point of Life award from the Points of Light organization, an organization that was established by the late President George H.W. Bush.

Dr. Parker attended the UCLA School of Dentistry for 10 years and received his dental degree in 1977 and two certificates, one in general practice residency in 1978 and one in oral and maxillofacial surgery in 1982. He received the UCLA Medal from Chancellor Gene Block at the school’s 2014 commencement ceremony and was also recognized as the 2012 Alumnus of the Year.

The Parkers have served on the Mercy Ships for more than 30 years and are a true embodiment of the dedication and service that the Daily Point Award recognizes.

UCLA Benefactor Gives to Californians in Their Time of Need

Mr. Bob Wilson, a UCLA School of Dentistry Board of Counselors Member and benefactor of the Wilson-Jennings-Bloomfield UCLA Venice Dental Center, was featured in the San Diego Union Tribune for the generous gifts he gave to the more than 1,000 students and staff of Paradise High School. Mr. Wilson’s gift of $1 million will help the high school students and staff who were affected by the recent Camp Fire in the city of Paradise, Calif.

Alum Pushes His Physical Limits

Dr. Kris Mendoza, UCLA DDS Class of 2015, dental anesthesiology 2018, was named the 2018 World’s Toughest Mudder winner. Dr. Mendoza completed an obstacle course consisting of 5-mile loops with 20-24 obstacles per loop. He covered 100 miles in 24 hours, making him the seventh competitor to run 100 miles in this competition. He is one of four competitors to have run 100 miles in two races. Dr. Mendoza started obstacle-course racing while he was in dental school.
