Dear UCLA Dentistry Family,

Paul Krebsbach

Welcome to our Summer 2018 eNewsletter. We wrapped up our 2017-18 academic and fiscal year at the end of June, and the UCLA School of Dentistry continues to be a beacon for the best and brightest minds from around the world. Our exceptional scholars are transforming the field of dentistry and establishing the school as a new model for excellence and innovation in research, teaching, and service to the community.

We held our 51st commencement ceremony at the beginning of June where we conferred 106 dental degrees and nine master’s degrees, and recognized 52 specialty certificate holders. We also started a new tradition at this ceremony by inviting graduates to be hooded by their UCLA DDS alumni parents. This is a tradition that we look forward to continuing.

On September 18, we will welcome our Class of 2022 to the UCLA Dentistry family at our annual White Coat Ceremony – a ceremony that signifies the start of a student dentist’s four years of training. For the third year in a row, we are holding an alumni reception in Northern California on Friday, Sept. 7, where I look forward to engaging and becoming better acquainted with our Northern California alumni. On Friday, Oct. 5 and Saturday, Oct. 6, the Section of Pediatric Dentistry is holding an Oral Health Innovation Forum, which will bring together all the professional schools and units in UCLA health sciences. More details to come on that event.

Lastly, I would like to acknowledge and thank our dedicated donors, alumni, faculty, students, and friends, for helping us exceed our $4.5 million fiscal year fundraising goal by nearly $300,000. We closed out the year by raising $4.8 million in support of our mission for excellence in dental research, patient care, and community service.

I always say this, and I truly mean it - this dental school wouldn’t be where it is today without the hard work and dedication from all of you - our students, staff, faculty, alumni, donors, and friends. Thank you for your leadership, partnership, and support to improve the oral and systemic health of the people of California, the nation, and the world.
