Krebsbach headshotDear UCLA Dentistry Family,

With the successful completion of the WREB exam, the Class of 2019 is close to completing the final leg of their four-year academic journey. We will confer their degrees at commencement on Sunday, June 2, when we welcome keynote speaker, Dr. Judith Albino, president emerita of the University of Colorado and a professor at the Colorado School of Public Health. She is also the scientific editor for the 2020 Surgeon General’s Report on Oral Health in America.

Our upcoming graduates could not be in a better position to start their careers. The 2019 U.S. News and World Report of America’s 100 Best Jobs includes multiple oral health professions at the top, and it states that general dentists have an unemployment rate of less than 1 percent.

Additionally, I would like to recognize a visionary gift made by Dr. Naomi Ellison and Mr. Jim Ellison to establish the School’s 12th endowed chair. The Naomi and Jim Ellison Endowed Chair will allow UCLA Dentistry to recruit and retain a top faculty member in restorative dentistry who will train future leaders for generations to come. This significant gift from the Ellisons empowers and inspires UCLA Dentistry by putting our mission for excellence in dental education at the forefront.

Noteworthy research highlights include Dr. David Wong’s research team and collaborators receiving regulatory approval on their EFIRM technology, which can now be used in doctors’ offices to test saliva for lung cancer biomarkers. And, Dr. Alireza Moshaverinia publishing research on a new class of membranes that he and his collaborators developed, that could become a viable periodontitis therapy.

I am so grateful for all our wonderful students, residents, alumni, faculty, staff, and the entire UCLA Dentistry community for working diligently to continue our upward trajectory. I look forward to sending off the Class of 2019 with style and grace at our 52nd Commencement Ceremony.
