New Hydrogels Show Promise in Treating Bone Defects

Dr. Min Lee, professor of biomaterials science, led a research study about a new hydrogel that is more porous and effective in promoting tissue repair and regeneration compared to hydrogels that are currently available. Their findings, which are published online in the journal Nature Communications, suggest that in the near future the next generation of hydrogel systems could greatly improve current biomaterial-based therapeutics to repair bone defects.

Other authors of the study are co-first author Zhong-Kai Cui, an assistant professor of cell biology at Southern Medical University in China; and Dr. Benjamin Wu, Dr. Tara Aghaloo, Jessalyn Baljon and Soyon Kim, all of UCLA.

Save the Date to Fight Cancer

Bowl for Ronnie, a celebrity bowling tournament hosted by the Ronnie Dio Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund, will take place on Thursday, November 7, 2019, at Pinz Bowling Center. Proceeds will help benefit the research endeavors of salivary diagnostics research at the UCLA School of Dentistry.

To date, the Ronnie Dio fund has given roughly $260,000 to help further develop Dr. David Wong’s research, which aims to diagnose cancer through saliva testing.

We hope to see you there. Visit event site to register.

Research Advancements

Dr. Reuben Kim, chair and professor of restorative dentistry, and Dr. Cun-Yu Wang, professor and chair of oral biology and holder of the Dr. No-Hee Park Endowed Chair in Dentistry, led a research study on how the mechanical process of bone loss works and have also identified a protein that is responsible for recycling of the cells that can also promote bone loss. The team showed that by eliminating a key protein responsible for the activation of bone loss, there is the potential to control the level of bone loss a person would develop. The study is published online in Journal of Bone and Mineral Research and will appear in print in the September issue. It was also highlighted in the August issue of Nature Reviews Endocrinology.

Other UCLA authors of the study were Dr. No-Hee Park, Terresa Kim, Atsushi Arai, Sol Kim and Vadim Goldshteyn. Reuben Kim, Wang and Park are all members of the Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center. Reuben Kim and Park are members of The Shapiro Family Laboratory of Viral Oncology and Aging Research.

Dr. Paul Krebsbach, dean and professor of periodontics, led a research study on how mEAK-7, a gene that his team discovered last year, may play a significant role in cancer metastasis, at least in lung cancers. Building on that earlier gene discovery in human cells, the team compared mEAK-7 expression levels in normal cells and cancer cells using tumor cell genetic information from several databases and tissue samples from cancer patients. The research was published in the journal iScience.

Dr. Joe Nguyen, a National Cancer Institute postdoctoral scholar, is the first author and Dr. Jin Koo Kim, UCLA Dentistry project scientist, is a co-author. Additional study authors are Fatima Haidar, Alexandra Fox, Connor Ray and Daniela Mendonça, all from the University of Michigan.

Ichiro NishimuraDr. Ichiro Nishimura, professor of prosthodontics, co-led a pre-clinical study that could prevent patients treated for cancer or osteoporosis from experiencing jawbone damage as a result of oral surgery. The researchers were able to remove the bisphosphonate drugs from the jawbone by injecting another kind of bisphosphonate compound that is inert and doesn’t have pharmacological effect. This technique displaced the bisphosphonate drug bound to the jawbone’s surface. The potential advantage of this technique in a clinical setting is that it would allow the bisphosphonate drugs to remain bound to the rest of the skeleton, continuing to prevent bone loss, while being displaced from the jawbone and clearing the way for oral surgery. The research study, published in Bone Science Direct, was in collaboration with colleagues at USC.
