Program Requirements for International Trainees

In order to maintain a safe teaching and patient care environment for all our international trainees and our patients, we must comply with the following regulations:

Immigration
All trainees who are not U.S. citizens, permanent residents, or on a visa status authorized for enrollment in full-time studies must enter the United States on an F-1 visa. The I-20 is necessary for application for an F-1 visa is processed by the International Student Office at UCLA Extension. This is a non-immigrant visa which allows you to enter the U.S. for the purpose of studying for a limited time. The I-20 request form will be sent to you after acceptance to the program.

For those requesting the I-20 for F-1 student status, an international student fee of $1,300 will be charged after acceptance to the program.

Health Insurance & Medical Clearance
All trainees enrolled in an Advanced Clinical Training (ACT) program or preceptorships, or enrolled as an international trainee in a Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) accredited program are required to be insured under an adequate health insurance plan during all periods of registration.

Health insurance may be purchased via Relations Insurance Services through UCLA Extension and paid for quarterly. To purchase health insurance and view policy details, please visit the Relations Insurance Services website, or call 1-877-246-6997 to speak to a representative. Please note that UCLA Extension trainees are not eligible to be seen at the on-campus student health facility.

The UCLA School of Dentistry requires that trainees obtain a medical clearance prior to enrollment in the program for individual and community health reasons. The medical clearance must include a complete physical examination and demonstration of immunity to certain communicable diseases. Annual monitoring for tuberculosis will also be necessary.

Medical Malpractice
Trainees in all ACT programs, preceptorships, and international postgraduates in CODA approved programs will be required to purchase medical malpractice insurance approved by the UCLA School of Dentistry to cover their patient care activities.
