Retirement Announcement: Dr. Ronald Mito

Dr. Ronald Mito, Executive Associate Dean for Academic Programs & PersonnelAfter 40 years of dedicated and passionate service to the dental school and the profession, Dr. Ronald Mito, Professor and Executive Associate Dean for Academic Programs and Personnel, has decided to retire at the end of the 2017 academic year, effective June 30, 2017.

As a proud alumnus of the UCLA D.D.S. Class of 1976, Dr. Mito completed the UCLA residency program in Hospital Dentistry and Family Practice in 1977. Following his clinical training, he went on to serve the UCLA School of Dentistry in multiple capacities spanning a tenure of 30 years, including Director of the General Practice Residency program, Chair of the Section of Hospital Dentistry, Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, Associate Dean for Clinical Dental Sciences, and ultimately, as the first Executive Associate Dean for Academic Programs and Personnel. Dr. Mito is also a highly regarded general practitioner and was the Director our Faculty Group Dental Practice from 2000 to 2013.

In addition to his administrative and clinical roles, Dr. Mito’s academic achievements are impressive. As a Professor of Clinical Dentistry, Step 8, he has published nearly 70 papers, book chapters, reports and abstracts; and, has received nearly $2.3 million in extramural grant support. He is responsible for obtaining federal funds to create the Westwood AEGD and the Venice AEGD programs, as well as, the expansion of the General Practice Residency. He is nationally known for his expertise in GME funding for residency support and was instrumental in collaborating with our medical center to pay dental residents.

Known for his leadership throughout the dental profession, Dr. Mito has served in numerous capacities over the years, including President of the Western Los Angeles Dental Society, Trustee to the California Dental Association, President and Chairman of the Board of the American Association of Hospital Dentists, and Chair of the American Dental Education Association Legislative Advisory Committee. Of note, he was appointed by the Secretary of Health and Human Services, Donna Shalala, to serve on the first Advisory Committee on Training in Primary Care Medicine and Dentistry and served as Vice-Chair for three years. He was appointed by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to the Dental Board of California and served as Vice-President for three years.

Dr. Mito has received many honors over his career including Fellowship in the American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentistry, the Pierre Fauchard Academy and Omicron Kappa Upsilon dental honor society. In 2002, he was honored as one of ten U.S. dentists to be the first group inducted “without examination” to be a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh, UK. Just recently, Dr. Mito received the prestigious Arthur A. Dugoni Faculty Award from the California Dental Association Foundation.

As an active member of his community, he received the Friends of Education Award from the LAX Coastal Chamber of Commerce; serves on Community Police Advisory Board for the Los Angeles Police Department Pacific Area, an appointment by Chief Charlie Beck; and was also recently elected as Civilian Co-Chair.

Despite the fact that he is retiring, Dr. Mito has agreed to be recalled part-time to serve as a Special Assistant to the Dean.
