Ben WuA second phase funding grant, totaling $12 million over three years, was announced today from the National Institute of Dental & Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) for the California-based Center for Dental, Oral & Craniofacial Tissue & Organ Regeneration (C-DOCTOR). The award will help continue the ground-breaking research of the C-DOCTOR project, one of two national resource centers comprising the NIDCR’s Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Tissue Regeneration Consortium.

UCLA’s principal investigator on the project, Dr. Ben Wu, professor and chair of the division of advanced prosthodontics, said that, “the institutions in the C-DOCTOR consortiums are pioneers in stem cells and regenerative medicine, and many projects at various stages of research and development at UCLA and other institutions and companies nationwide will benefit from the amazing C-DOCTOR resources.”

C-DOCTOR represents a partnership among several California institutions that joined forces in 2016 during an NIDCR Tissue Regeneration Resource Center planning program. The locations include the U.C. campuses of San Francisco, Berkeley, Davis, and Los Angeles; University of Southern California; and Stanford University. C-DOCTOR will be a national resource for the recruitment, cultivation, and clinical translation of innovative regenerative technologies to replace dental and craniofacial tissues and organs lost to congenital disorders, trauma, and disease. Its primary mission is to provide comprehensive clinical, scientific, technical, regulatory, financial, and managerial resources to promote cost-effective and timely progression of tissue engineering/regenerative medicine products to human clinical trials.

“The NIDCR award will accelerate the development of advanced tissue engineering products to repair dental, oral, and craniofacial defects,” said Wu who is also the director of the UCLA Weintraub Center for Reconstructive Biotechnology at the UCLA School of Dentistry.

Other Principal Investigators of C-DOCTOR include Yang Chai, DDS, PhD (University of Southern California), Yong Chen, PhD (University of Southern California), Kevin Healy, PhD (University of California, Berkeley), Ophir Klein, MD, PhD (University of California, San Francisco), Nancy Lane, MD (University of California, Davis), Michael Longaker, MD, MBA (Stanford University), Jeffrey Lotz, PhD (University of California, San Francisco – contact PI), and Mark Urata, MD, DDS (University of Southern California).

The C-DOCTOR is actively recruiting additional industry partners (contact: Dr. Jeffrey Lotz, jeffrey.lotz@ucsf.edu); identifying unmet clinical needs (contact Dr. Yang Chai, ychai@usc.edu); and evaluating mature tissue regeneration technologies (contact Dr. Dezba Coughlin - Northern California contact – dezba.coughlin@ucsf.edu or Dr. Bridget Samuels - Southern California contact - bdsamuel@usc.edu).
