Dear students, residents, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends,Dean No-Hee Park

First of all, I want to wish everyone a happy, healthy, and prosperous New Year. For the UCLA School of Dentistry, 2014 marks our 50th Anniversary. In 1964, UCLA welcomed the first 28 dental students ever to its campus. To commemorate this milestone, we have planned a very exciting schedule of events, which will kick-off on Saturday, May 17, 2014 and run through the following May. The kick-off will take place at the Annual Alumni Day in conjunction with the CDA Spring Scientific Session. We will also acknowledge our Co-Alumni and Co-Honorary Alumni of the Year. I encourage everyone to join the festivities.

Reflecting on the last few months of 2013, I am very proud of our efforts to fulfill our mission of improving the oral health of the community through education, research, patient care, and public service.

Several of our research faculty had their work published in some of the country’s most prominent journals, which reaffirms that we are at the forefront of dental and oral health research. Another significant accolade was that Dr. Cun-Yu Wang was elected to the Chinese Academy of Engineering – one of the most prestigious and exclusive engineering and medical academies in Asia.

We also participated in two large-scale community outreach events. On October 12th, we held our first screening day at the headquarters of Wilshire Bank. We were able to screen nearly 250 local Koreatown residents. The following weekend, we treated almost half of those residents at a corresponding clinic day on October 19th. We are grateful to Wilshire Bank for making an investment in the community. The second event was our participation in Care Harbor – a free health clinic that takes place in downtown Los Angeles. This was our fourth year participating and the demand for dental services was at an all-time high.

Two of our staff members welcomed new babies to their families and another staff member was commended on her leadership in the community.

Thank you for taking the time to read this letter, and I encourage everyone to learn more about what makes the UCLA School of Dentistry such an amazing place to study, learn, educate, and work.

Sincerely,

No-Hee Park, DMD, PhD
