The Section of Endodontics is a unit within the Division of Associated Clinical Specialties. Endodontics is a specialty of dentistry dealing with the etiology, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of the diseases of the pulp and periradicular tissues.  The mission of our Section is to maintain excellence in teaching, research, and service to our patients and the community.

The Section of Endodontics welcomes volunteers in clinical activities as well as in the other educational and academic activities, including clinical teaching, lectures, seminars, course preparation and organization, research, and service. Interested individuals may contact Ashley TerHorst at (310) 825-7666.

Teaching Programs

Faculty members in Endodontics participate in the teaching programs for predoctoral DDS students, postgraduate residents in the specialty program, foreign students in the Advanced Clinical Training Program and preceptorship program, and dentists and endodontists enrolled in the School of Dentistry's many continuing education programs.

Research

Research is one of the main Section activities. Faculty members and postdoctoral students are engaged in various research activities that include molecular biology, microbiology, regenerative research, material sciences, and clinical outcomes assessment. Faculty research activities are detailed in our individual faculty bios.

All postgraduate residents in Endodontics are actively engaged in research projects and present their findings at national and international meetings, including the American Association of Endodontists (AAE) and the International/American Association for Dental Reserach (IADR/AADR).

Patient Care

Our Section provides the clinical care of endodontics to the general public in the predoctoral and postgraduate Weichman Endodontic Clinic. Our clinical care covers the full spectrum of endodontics including root canal therapies, root canal retreatments, endodontic microsurgeries, vital pulp therapies, apexifications, apexogenesis, internal bleaching, and endodontic emergencies. Our specialty clinic is operated by the postgraduate residents who already completed formal DDS training in dental schools and selected from extremely competitive pool of applicants.  Many of them have graduated from the top 5% of their classes and have completed additional clinical training before entering our postgraduate program.

How to Refer Patients to Our Clinics

Patients are accepted to our endodontic specialty clinics on a referral basis.  We offer three different levels of specialty endodontic services: (a) DDS student dentists; (b) postgraduate residents under faculty supervision at the Weichman Endodontic Clinic; and (c) by our faculty members practicing at the Faculty Endodontic Group Practice.  The Weichman Endodontic Clinic can be reached by phone at (310) 825-4348, by fax at (310) 794-4900, or via email at wamaya@dentistry.ucla.edu. The Faculty Endodontic Group Practice is located in the UCLA Medical Plaza 100 Building and can be reached by phone at (310) 794-5750.
